Ján Štrasser

Jan Štrasser was born on February 25, 1946, in Košice, Slovakia. He studied Russian language and literature, and graduated from the philosophy faculty of Comenius University in Bratislava. Jan Štrasser worked as an editor-in-chief of the literary magazines Mlada tvorba and Slovenske pohlady.  He started out as a literary critic but quickly found his own poetic voice with the collection Podmet. He is author of the 10 poetic collections. His writing is full of self-irony for the small man, a bit impractical in a world that is too real and disappointing. Štrasser is a multi-faceted poet, intuitive and skillful at the same time; he masters both the high and low poetry genres. He is also an awarded translator, a columnist and the author of various books of interviews with interesting and famous people from the Slovak public life.

He also translated works by Aleksandr Pushkin, Iosiph Brodsky, Bulat Okudzhava, Anton Chekhov, Vladimir Sorokin, Liudmila Ulitskaya.
