What happens when an ordinary life is suddenly interrupted by war?
There is a park. An ice cream parlor. A cinema. A stadium where four friends meet without making plans in advance. They simply know they will find each other there.
Then comes the news: the war is coming.
In The Last Message (Sista meddelandet), Ukrainian playwright Nina Zakhozhenko tells the story of four friends confronting a new and violent reality. They respond to the war in different ways: one flees, another makes Molotov cocktails. Yet they continue to stay in touch - from basements and barricades, neighboring countries and temporary shelters.
Until one day, someone stops answering.
The Last Message is a story about everyday life before and during war, about uncertainty and separation, and about the moment when the unimaginable becomes real.
The play was written specifically for Dramaten and is based on Zakhozhenko’s earlier work I’m OK, written immediately after the Bucha massacre.
The piece was previously presented at Dramaten as a staged reading within the Dramaten.Doc program.
