On February 08, 2023 - February 11, 2023, the Centaur Theatre Company in Montreal, Canada, presents the play Planting An Apple Tree by Ukrainian playwright Iryna Harets. The drama is a part of the Centaur Theater’s Wildside Festival and is directed by Leslie Baker. The play was translated into English by John Freedman and Natalia Bratus.
Planting An Apple Tree is the story of a woman’s fear, love, and despair, the need for balance, and the question of survival during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Despite all the horrors, a woman is following her dream – to plant the apple orchard. Unexpectedly, the apple tree planting guide helps her understand the fragility of life during the war and all the terror.
The playwright says that the play “…is about Victory Gardens that give us hope, and blossom in our souls despite war and the cacophony of a mad world.”
