Viktoriia Boiko has emerged as the winner of the Iryna Steshenko Drama Translation Competition, showcasing her exceptional skill and deep passion for the art of translation.
Born and raised in Kyiv, Viktoriia developed a lifelong fascination with languages, history, and culture. Her professional interests encompass game localization, medical translation, and the study of archaic and obsolete vocabulary and practices—demonstrating her commitment to preserving and revitalizing linguistic heritage.
In 2024, she earned a Master’s degree in Translation (English and Ukrainian) from Borys Hrinchenko Kyiv Metropolitan University. In her free time, she immerses herself in Ukrainian metric books or deciphers historical medical manuscripts, blending her love of history with her linguistic expertise.
As a translator, Viktoriia is dedicated to popularizing Ukrainian culture — whether by sharing the stories of national heroes or uncovering the origins of village names—ensuring that Ukraine’s rich heritage resonates with a global audience.
Amidst challenging times, her achievement stands as a testament to resilience and creativity. Her German translation of Lesia Ukrainka’s Blue Rose has been widely acclaimed for its authenticity and innovative approach, bringing Ukrainian classical theatre to a broader international stage.
The competition was launched and held within the framework of the Ukrainian Drama Network project, initiated by Theater Na Zhukah and financed by the Culture and Education Stabilization Fund of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany (Auswärtiges Amt) and the Goethe-Institut. The organizers of the Competition were Hryhoriy Kochur Department of Translation Studies and Contrastive Linguistics, the Center for English-speaking academic and cross-cultural communication of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and Theater Translation Lab. The Ukrainian Drama Network involves a wide range of partners, including the Ukrainian Institute, UkrDramaHub platform, the Theater of Playwrights, the National Union of Theater Artists, and Theater Platform.
